DADA Manifesto - A Randsom Note to Society
By Simone Schlosz
Benjamin Lacombe
Benjamin Lacombe was born in Paris in 1982. He studied at École Nationale Supé´rieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris. During he’s studies Lacombe worked in advertising and animation. At age 19 he completed his first graphic novel as well as several other illustrated books.
His final school project, “Cerise Griotte (Cherrry and Olive)”, was published by Seuil Jeunesse in March 2006, becoming his first children’s book. In 2007 the book was named one of the 10 best children’s books by Times Magazine.
Benjamin Lacombe lives and works in Paris with his dogs, Virgile and Lisbeth.
His work is a peculiar blend between the styles of Disney and Tim Burton. He’s work allows the viewer to enter into a dream world. He includes his dogs in almost all of his books. In some stories they are characters, in others they are hidden as small parts in the bigger whole.
Lacombe, a perfectionist, always carries a notebook around with him, in which he outlines characters. These characters are then taken to his office, where he redraws and enlarges his characters in pencil and paints them. It usually takes him about three days to complete each work, but he can spend up to 10 days on a complicated work.
Benjamin Lacombe is already known throughout the world and has exhibited in places like Paris, Rome and Tokyo. He authored and illustrated 20 books that have won awards worldwide, including Butterfly Lovers, Genealogy of a Witch, Tales Silent, and Melody in the City.
He part of a new generation of artists with the potential to bring a new vision to classics like Snow White.
Some of Lacombe’s work includes children’s book illustrations: Red Riding Hood (2004), Cherry Cherry (2006), Long hair (2006), Ernest fateful night (2007), Butterfly Lovers (2007), Genealogy of A Witch (2008), Melody in The City (2009), White (2010), The Herbarium of Fairies (2011), Swinging Christmas (2012); adult’s book illustration: Macabre Tales (2009), Notre-Dame de Paris, Partie 1 (2011), Notre-Dame de Paris, Partie 2 (2012); graphic novels: The Zeitgeist Volume 1 (2003), The Zeitgeist Volume 2 (2005); illustrations: The cat teacher (2003), Why the tortoise shell? (2006), Tell me another story (2007), Fate of dogs (2007), The quiet child (2008), Once upon a time (2010), Rossignol (2011).
